Ivory Throne Leg - 13th Century India

Since at least the second century, Indian sculptors created ivory thrones to proclaim royal command. On this splendidly carved throne leg, a gajasimha—a mythical creature combining the strength of an elephant (gaja) and a lion (simha)—calmly dispatches the demonic warrior dangling from its trunk. The sculptor contrasted the forceful curves and broad smooth surfaces of the elephant-lion with an intricately realized mountain landscape. Archers and wildlife gambol through its crags, while a hermit meditates and a lion slumbers.
Finely Carved Ivory Image of the Goddess Kali - Mid 19th Century Bengal
Finely carved ivory image of the goddess Kali trampling on the prostrate body of Shiva. In this fearsome form, she is shown with her tongue projecting, brandishing weapons in two of her four arms, and holding a human head. She is also wearing a necklace of human skulls. The image is placed within a neo-classical door-way with pillars and a fanlight with floral designs, and mounted on a rectangular ivory base.

This Sculpture once belonged to Lady Henrietta Clive, daughter-in-law of Lord Robert Clive. Clive led the British forces at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, one of the climactic events leading to the establishment of British rule in India. Lady Clive lived in Madras in south India between 1798 and 1803, where her husband, the son of Robert Clive, was governor.Source:http://www.bmimages.com
